How it all started

The name Jabez is taken from a Bible character. Although there is only a short passage about the man (1 Chronicles 4 vv 9-10), his situation and his behaviour are noteworthy: Jabez was born in adversity; he prayed to God; and God was faithful. This Bible passage struck a chord with Jabez' founder and she felt prompted to begin the work.

We seek to provide help to those in need, focusing on education and development to give hope for their future. Our desire is to assist in the growth of Christian men and women, that they might go on to fulfil God's plan for their lives. We long to see Christian men and women equipped for positions of leadership in all walks of life.

The work of Jabez started informally in 1999, providing financial support for a small group of university students in Romania. Working with local partners, Jabez has since selected and supported about 30 students. Subjects studied by Jabez students have included medicine, philosophy, music, theology, economics, sociology, psychology and computing.

Vision

The vision of Jabez is essentially to help advance the Kingdom of God through providing opportunities for the education and development of both individuals and communities, equipping people to move on in their walk with God - wherever that might lead. This vision is worldwide, with a view to operate in every continent.

The resources that become available to Jabez will, after prayerful and diligent consideration, be used for the intelligent resourcing of God's people and His work. We will seek God's leading in all matters, and also undertake to employ the God-given skills and abilities of Jabez' leaders in order to make the most appropriate decisions.

The primary focus will be on young people, in recognition of their potential for growth and future contribution to both the working world and the church. Jabez places particular emphasis on identifying and supporting potential leaders, recognising the special role and influence such people might have.

There will be a bias towards the poor and needy, acknowledging the uneven distribution of wealth and resources in the world. However, the aim is to facilitate development, not simply release from poverty.

In seeking individuals or projects to support, Jabez will look for some pre-existent demonstrable academic or practical ability. Jabez will support individuals in all areas of life and work, not exclusively those in full time Christian work or study.

In the first instance, Jabez has focused on supporting students in higher education. However, as Jabez grows, it is envisaged that consideration might be given to general education and development programmes - on a much broader basis, to include all ages and types of education and development. In all cases, the aim will be to ensure the provision of appropriate development opportunities for individuals and communities, rather than (for example) the most obvious or simplest to deliver.

Given that there is great need within the scope of Jabez' vision, and recognising that limited resources are available, all individuals and projects will be subject to a selection process. Efforts will be made to ensure that all such selection is conducted rigorously and fairly, taking account of the overall vision and aims of Jabez.

In all that the organisation does, Jabez has a concern for excellence and for maximizing potential.

Statement of Faith

In all areas of work, Jabez will be non-denominational. Jabez has adopted the Evangelical Alliance Statement of Faith, which outlines where the organisation stands and the beliefs held corporately. Those directly involved in the work of Jabez will be required to sign-up to the following Statement of Faith:

Evangelical Christians accept the revelation of the triune God given in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and confess the historic faith of the Gospel therein set forth.

They here assert doctrines that they regard as crucial to the understanding of the faith, and which should issue in mutual love, practical Christian service and evangelistic concern.

· The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation, redemption and final judgement.

· The divine inspiration of the Holy Scripture and its consequent entire trustworthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

· The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man, making him subject to God's wrath and condemnation.

· The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole all sufficient ground of redemption from the guilt and power of sin and from its eternal consequences.

· The justification of the sinner solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead.

· The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling and sanctifying work of God the Holy Spirit.

· The priesthood of all believers, who form the universal Church, the Body of which Christ is the Head and which is committed by His command to the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world.

· The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ in power and glory.
